Biography
Sonya A. Lawyer has exhibited in numerous venues across the United States including Jenkins Johnson Gallery in New York City and School 33 Art Center in Baltimore, Maryland, among others.

In 2002, she participated in the National Graduate Seminar sponsored by The Photography Institute and hosted by Columbia University in New York City.

From 2004 to 2005, she participated in Maryland Art Place’s 19th Annual Critics’ Residency. Franklin Sirmans was the Critic in Residence and curated the culminating show “Just Looking”.

In 2007, Ms. Lawyer was an Artist in Residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York. Her work has been published in Contact Sheet, The International Review of African American Art, and Nueva Luz.

She recently received an Individual Artist’s Award from the Maryland State Art’s Council.

Ms. Lawyer received her MFA from the University of Florida and a BS from Howard University.

Currently, she is a Full-time faculty member in the Photographic Imaging department at the Art Institute of Washington.
